What to do about a rodent in the roof

It’s almost impossible to get rid of rodents from the environment completely but when we take certain preventive measures in our home, we can completely get rid of rodents from our homes. Rodents can be found in almost every corner of the home, from the kitchen to the basement and to the roof, they can thrive in almost any part of the home with comfortable shelter. One part of the home where rodents can be found is in the roof, it provides them with enough shelter, and keeps them hidden from contact with humans during the day.

Rats, mice and even raccoons often find their way into the roof of our buildings through cracks in the wall or a hole in the roof which makes it easy for them to get access into the home. They can also get access to the home through open windows and the attic. Finding a rodent in the roof will be a common occurrence if you live in an urban area with enough food source. If you happen to find a rodent in your roof, here are some steps you need to take to get rid of it.

1. Identify and seal all cracks in the wall and holes in the roof as this how rodents get into the home in the first place and to avoid a reoccurrence, you need to ensure that all entrances into the home from outside have been taken care of. Openings through which wirings and cables enter into the home from outside should be properly sealed. Also, pipes that lead into the home from outside should be fitted with gauze to prevent rodents from crawling into the roof through them.

2. Next step will be to ensure that all windows, and doors shut properly and any faulty ones should be replaced immediately. Windows that do not shut completely are another means by which rodents get into the home. Also, all foodstuffs should be kept in tight containers and dishes should be washed immediately after each meal. Food crumbs and litters shouldn’t be left unattended to as once you make it impossible for rodents to find food in your home, it becomes difficult for them to feed and will find an alternative shelter.

3. After taking the necessary precaution to ensure that you eliminate the chances of rodents getting into the home in the future, the next step will be to eliminate the rodent population present in the home. This will involve the use of traps and baits to get rid of them. You can get a mouse trap and place it at a point where rodents are sighted the most. You will need more than one if you are dealing with a lot of rats. Another way to get rid of rodents from the home is by using baits laced with rat poison. Simply get a bait such as a piece of fish and spice it with a potent rat poison and leave the area of the home where they are sighted the most. Once the rodent eats the bait, after some few minutes after the poison has taken effect you can find them lying around dead.
